How to be taken Seriously as a Blogger

If you’ve been following FashionContainer closely, you know that the past month has been marked by enormous changes in my life. One of them is that I’m now doing FashionContainer full time!  Over the years  I’ve been getting used on confused faces when telling about my blog, but right now the pressure is even bigger to have a decent explanation on what a blogger exactly does and how it’s possible to make a living from it. Because ‘blogging’ is such an abstract notion for many, here’s a few tips on how to be taken seriously doing what you do.

1. Take yourself and what you do seriously first

When people used to ask me about my blog and what is it that I exactly do, I’d often turn it into a joke. “Oh I just post pictures of myself on the internet and stuff”. If you want people to have a somewhat accurate understanding of what you do, you have to take what you do seriously first. To make people briefly understand the business side of blogging, I for example try explaining the concept of brand collaborations, why companies work with bloggers, how that’s valuable for them and why the relationship between bloggers and brands is only getting stronger and more important every day.

2. Don’t tell them, show them

You’d be surprised how many people I’ve met over the years who don’t even know what a blog is, let alone that they understand how you can make a living of it. To help people visualize what you do, simply give them a glimpse of your instagram or blog. This will instantly make your ‘brand collaborations’ and ‘affiliate income’ stories come to life.

3. Explain the bigger picture

I’m a strong believer in the online world:  it’s only going to be increasingly important the coming years. Most probably also in ways that we can’t even imagine right now. Fact is that the value of having an online presence if you want to be your own boss and can open many doors, now and in the future. I’m still figuring out the exact direction for FashionContainer, but it’s becoming clearer and clearer for me that I want it to be a platform much bigger than just a personal blog.

What do you think is the best way to describe what a blogger does? Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this.
